The Twenty Percent

1) I talked to a business owner who owns some Five Guys restaurants in the Tampa area. He declined to be video interviewed. He described his customers jokingly as anyone who consumes meat. He believes that his restaurant targets a very wide variety of people, unlike many businesses. He said that the fast food business is slightly different than other businesses in that they have the ability to target a much larger base of people. The customer’s problem is hunger and desire to feel satisfied. He believes that his product has the ability to fix their hunger issue as well as leave his customer more satisfied than its competitors. He also emphasized the ability to create a quality burger in a short period of time. When people walk into a Five Guys they expect to be served quickly. The customers problem is most likely at a 5 when rated on a scale of 1-10. Food is a necessity but there are many options on where to eat. The product is priced relatively high which makes it a luxury fast food item. Sometimes people may be willing to spend more money to buy this higher priced fast-food item than other times.
2) Customers agreed with the views of the business owner that I spoke to. Most people that I talked to said they enjoy the food that Five Guys produces. They agreed that Five Guys should create a quality burger in a short period of time. Some people expanded on the cleanliness and overall experience. The entrepreneur did not mention much about the sit down experience of Five Guys.

3) 3) I believe that the entrepreneur adequately understands the customer. He understands that people will not make the decision to eat his product every single day of the week but he does believe that it can be a very popular and regular meal option for his customers. He wanted to satisfy the needs and hunger of his customers and I believe his business does a very good job of doing that. One thing that I think the entrepreneur should focus on is how he can better improve the sit down experience of the customer. The peanuts are a good idea but I believe the restaurant can add an element of serving its customers. I have always had to go pick up the food when it is ready. I believe it could enhance the experience if the food was delivered to me once it was finished.

  1. Hey Cameron,
I think that Five Guys was a great choice of business for this project. It is known and often used by many of the students reading this post. I appreciate the fact that you summarized your interview with the owner even though he declined to be videoed. I also think it was great that the customer views were well related to the ideas of the owner. However, I recommend that you diversify your interviewees next time! The three interviewees seemed to be from very similar life paths. Maybe you could speak again to the owner about your suggestions. He might be interested in hearing your suggestions on food service!
I didn't have the chance to complete this exercise, but I enjoyed watching your videos and reading your post!

  2. Hey Cameron,
Its cool that you picked Five Guys because I really enjoy their food. I agree that their target customer can be a range of people because every has to eat. I think it would be better if you interviewed people at Five Guys though.

  3. Hi Cameron, great post! It's unfortunate that the entrepreneur didn't want to be video recorded, maybe next time ask if he would mind doing an audio recording instead? I've actually never been to Five Guys, so I enjoyed watching your customer interviews. A good follow-up question to ask would be why they haven't gone back in recent times (6 months is quite a while). I agree with Peter in that you may get more up-to-date feedback from someone who has eaten there very recently. 4. Hey Cameron,
Five guys has some great burgers, but they're a little overpriced in my opinion. I agree that Five Guy's target customer is a large span because so many different people have to eat and choose to eat burgers. Good work on this assignment and going out and interviewing people. http://flgatorblogging.blogspot.com

  5. Hi, Cameron!
I think Five Guys was a great choice to do this assignment on! It was nice to see how well the customers agreed with the responses of the owner, however, I did not see much diversity in the group. Perhaps it would have been better to interview individuals of different ages and sexes? Overall great job! I too had difficulty recording the entrepreneur!

  6. Hi Cameron,
I live in the Tampa area so I may be a customer of the man you interviewed. I agree with his views that his customer's wants are very basic. They want food and they want it to taste good. Five Guys does a great job of that and have a great national reputation for it. He is right in it is not something you would want to eat every day, but when the hunger for something fast yet satisfying arises he has a good chance of getting their business.

I was unable to complete this assignment so here is a link to my half way reflection: http://llogsdonent3003.blogspot.com/2016/02/half-way-reflection.html

  7. Hey Cameron,
Great post, couldn't agree more with the owners take on having such a wide base of customers to pull from. When you have a product like his, that is good in quality and cooked to the exact specifications of the customer, word of mouth will travel fast. Did he happen to mention how he advertises, or if he does in order to reach new customers and try to attract customers back more frequently? You were right about the higher prices, but the burger and fries you receive is definitely worth it. Great job and you can view my blog here. http://jww3.blogspot.com/

  8. Hey Cameron,

The truth is that I've never eaten at Five Guys. It looks like it offers good service and good food. Having expensive burgers, however, may limit the number of target customers. As long as the quality is good it's not a big of a problem. If the burgers were expensive and worse in quality it would have been a big loss on the entrepreneur's part. Lastly, I think you could ask the interviewees some more questions related to what your entrepreneur talked to you about, like why do they chose Five Guys over other burger restaurants or whether they would do anything to improve their eating experience there, like you mentioned the serving experience.

    Overall, nice job :)
